On April 22, vendors crowded under overhangs struggling to keep all their goodies dry awaiting the opening of the 12th Annual Touch-a-Truck community event. The Junior League of Reading, PA, Inc. and the Reading Fightin Phils partnered to present this fantastic event at FirstEnergy Stadium featuring a variety of local vendor tables and over 30 trucks and vehicles. They even hosted a special Sensory Friendly Hour for visitors who required a quieter environment before the event opened to the general public.
The Museum was honored to be one of the vendors for this event. Museum educators greeted visitors at their table and shared information about upcoming events and programs. Visitors picked up literature and hand-outs on adult and children’s programming, including Discovery Camp bookmarks. There were fun activities for children to do at the table – magnets with an array of miscellaneous objects to test their magnetic strength. The educators also made sure to promote The Museum’s upcoming exhibition – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!TM Secrets of the Sewer,TM sponsored locally by Customer’s Bank.
Outside the stadium, over 30 trucks and vehicles sat parked for children to climb on and take a peek inside. These included a crime scene investigation vehicle, an ambulance, and a school bus just to name a few. People huddled under umbrellas moving from vehicle to vehicle trying to keep dry. The event also included the Roaming Railroad, which provided train rides and race car track races to visitors. Despite the rainy, chilly weather, a good time was had by all!
