The Reading Public Museum is rounding out the year with an exciting array of exhibits that take visitors to the past with an interactive dinosaur exhibit, a look at political campaign posters of the past, and a journey across the Atlantic exploring French and American impressionist paintings.

Sign of the Times: The Great American Political Poster 1844–2012

Historically, the ephemeral hardworking American political poster has been hiding in plain sight, attempting to catch our eye and capture our vote through the use of visual language. In a survey that spans the life of these ubiquitous messengers, Sign of the Times: The Great American Political Poster 1844–2012 explores a variety of styles, design trends, and printing technology that will delight your eye, engage your imagination, and lead you to ruminate over past political commitments. Sign of the Times features fifty of the most exciting and rarely seen political posters created in the last 170 years.
Sign of the Times was curated by Hal Wert, Ph.D., collector and professor of history at Kansas City Art Institute, and organized by Exhibits USA/Mid-America Arts Alliance.
Across the Atlantic: American Impressionism through the French Lens
On View: September 8, 2018 – January 20, 2019
This extraordinary exhibition, drawn mostly from the collection of the Reading Public Museum, explores the path to Impressionism through the nineteenth century in France with more than 65 paintings. The show examines the sometimes complex relationship between French Impressionism of the 1870s and 80s and the American interpretation of the style in the decades that followed.
These paintings—including works by Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Willard Metcalf, Childe Hassam, and John H. Twachtman, among others— help tell the story of the “new style” of painting which developed at the end of the nineteenth century. The style emphasized light and atmospheric conditions, rapid or loose brushstrokes, and a focus on brightly colored scenes from everyday life, including both urban and rural settings.

Dinosaurs in Motion
On View: September 21, 2018 – January 6, 2019
Dinosaurs in Motion is an amazing blend of science, art, innovation, engaging, and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Mathematics) elements. The 12 life-sized metal sculptures captivate visitors while their exposed mechanics illustrate science and technology principles in a fun and engaging way. The exhibition weaves the science, art and innovation themes throughout and touches on each of these educational topics at each sculpture. The art portions highlight sketching, drawing, and sculpting; the science segments explore kinetics, biomechanics, and robotics; and the innovation areas encourage observing and experimenting.
