Happy Birthday to Nicolas Poussin!
June 15 - Born on this day in 1594, Poussin is regarded as the founder of the French Classical tradition, despite the fact that he worked for most of his artistic career in Rome. He favored classical and religious subject matter for his art, and in 1628 received a papal commission to paint The Martyrdom of Saint Erasmus for the Church of Saint Peter, which can be seen today in the Vatican Museums.
