Barbara Thun: Elegy

July 28 through September 16, 2012

Barbare Thun: ElegyBarbara Thun’s installation of Elegy consists of works from both Elegy I and II, and is a three part installation that employs multiple mediums.

Thun explains that her “installations create an environment with a particular period of time in mind and are often in the form of a narrative, or a cultural perspective.” True to this statement, Elegy, includes poetry, photos and totems to reveal the narrative of family history. Through the installation of Elegy, she intends “to comment on a small fragment of the human condition; the brevity of life, the ceasing of vitality, creativity, curiosity, intelligence and perceptible soul, the meaning of life – of any one person’s life, of any one woman’s life.”

In 1983, she received her Bachelors of Fine Arts at Plymouth State College in New Hampshire, where she later taught for 2 years. She went on to complete her Masters of Fine Arts at Bard College in 1989. Her work has been exhibited extensively within New Hampshire and Pennsylvania. Currently, she works out of a GoggleWorks studio in Reading, PA.

A few of her many achievements include holding the position of Gallery Director at Penn State Berks, from 1989 through 1991, and President of Penn State Berks Fine Arts Council, from 1992 through 1995, and chairing the “Landmarks” Outdoor Sculpture National Juried Exhibition.
