Sunday, March 29 - SIORA
It's
the first weekend of the VF Outlet Berks Jazz Fest, and we're excited
to bring you this world-class trio! The ensemble called SIORA plays
contemporary world jazz: a blend of music from Latin America, Europe,
the Middle East and the U.S., all with its own unique arrangements plus
some provacative original compositions in English.
SIORA has performed in a multitude of venues, from festivals to theatres, to schools, museums, clubs and churches throughout the U.S., Latin Amerrica and Europe. Their most recent performace took place at the Quito Jazz Festival in Ecuador in 2007.
SIORA features the multi-lingual singing and firey dancing of Phyllis Chappell. "Ms. Chappell's calling card ia her dacility with songs in their bnative languages, but her trump is a voice that is filled with smokey nuance and emotion, " wrote Cathy DeDe of the Lake George Chronicle after SIORA headlined at the Lake George Jazz Weekend.
Alongside Chappell is composer/arranger/keyboardist Dan Kleiman, who has recorded and performed with Grammy Award winning saxophonist Ernie Watts, guitarist Mike Stern, Benny Golson and the Fifth Dimension. Rounding out the group is bassist Rob Swanson, who has played with Giacomo Gates and the Clifford Brown & Stan Getz All Stars — among others — and who also has his own ensemble with original material and CDs.
"Our
music, wherever it comes from," says Dan Klieiman, SIORA's Musical Director,
"passes through the prism of jazz. It allows us the freedom to navigate
— to cross musical borders."
SIORA's latest CD release is called "Vis-a-Vis" and features special guests Howard Levy (harmonica), Ralph Bowen (sax/flute) and John Swana (trumpet). This CD hit the top 50 in national jazz radio and garnered a four-star rating from Scott Yarow (AllMusicGuide, JazzTimes, Downbeat).
Admission to “Bagels & Bach” is $25 for non-Members and $15 for Members, and includes admission to the Museum after the show. Reservations suggested (for food count only), but not necessary (610-371-5850 x 264).
