Nefrina's World
January 16, 2010 through December 31, 2011

Because of an amazing facial reconstruction created by world-renowned forensic sculptor and artist, Frank Bender, and based on the detailed physiological portrait provided by CAT scans made in 2003, this is the first time the public will come face-to-face with this 2,000 year-old woman from the ancient Egyptian town of Akhmim.

The sculpture will be on view in the Ancient Civilizations Gallery, accompanied by a new focus exhibition titled Nefrina's World. You’ll enjoy never-before-seen images of her CAT scans and fascinating new insights into the world in which she lived.

A Cultural Celebration: Arts of the Pennsylvania Germans from a Berks County Pri
June 12, 2010 through September 26, 2010

Featuring selections from a local private collection focused on the craftsmen and objects illustrating the traditional heritage of the Pennsylvania Germans, this exhibition includes nearly 100 works of art in a variety of media, dating largely from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Programming for the exhibition will include a Gallery Talk by guest curator, Louisa Bartlett, on Friday, June 25 at 4 p.m. followed by a Members Opening Reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. $15 for Non-Members, free for Members (also covers Jun Kaneko Opening Reception the same evening). Additional programming will be offered in September in conjunction with the reopening of the Arts of Southeastern Pennsylvania Gallery at the Museum.

Showcased are works of art on paper, textiles, metals, furniture and ceramics. These examples illuminate the vibrant diversity of Germanic folk arts in Pennsylvania and reveal the influence of various cross-cultural traditions.

Objects in this exhibition display an exuberance in decoration that is often found among works by the Pennsylvania Germans who loved to embellish even utilitarian forms — including glazed red earthenware plates, small ceramic figures of animals and birds, sugar bowls, and pipe holders. Also on exhibit are examples of the work of a number of Berks County potters, furniture forms including storage chests, the shrank or cupboard, and brightly painted fancy or Windsor chairs.

The technical skill of Pennsylvania artisans in metals is demonstrated in
the exhibition through pieces of pewter, brass fat-burning lamps and wrought iron. Works on paper include portraits of Berks County subjects, fraktur drawings, birth and baptismal certificates, writing samples, valentines, and broadsides.
