Face it, every family has their awkward moments, there is no way around it. Awkward Family Photos: The Exhibition is aimed to have families explore the imperfectly perfect moments that come with being a family and to celebrate the awkwardness while taking comfort in the fact that their family is not alone.
The exhibition includes more than two hundred classic photos, hilarious “behind the awkwardness’ stories from the actual families, and “The Awkward Family Portrait Studio” (where visitors can leave with an awkward family photo of their own).
This all started when Mike Bender saw an awkward family photo of his own hanging in his parents’ house. He realized that many other families experienced hilariously awkward moments. Mike then launched AwkwardFamilyPhotos.com in 2009, with his friend Doug Chernack. The site became an Internet sensation, receiving millions of visitors and submissions from around the world.
Here at The Museum, the exhibition’s timing is designed to allow families a chance to laugh a bit at themselves while they realize their family’s awkwardness is not that unusual. Opening the day after Thanksgiving and running through the holiday season, families will have a perfect opportunity to spend some quality time together and realize how thankful they should be to have the family that they do.
